1923-24 Xenia East HS
State Basketball Champions
Team members: Baker, C. Taylor, H. Taylor, D. Ware, Smith, "Inky" Williams, and Coach Lewis
In a period of time during which black athletes were for the most part denied the opportunity to compete on a level playing field with whites, this East High team reached the pinnacle of team athletic achievements by winning, according to a newspaper source, the State "Hi-Y colored tourney." Coach Lewis' team became the first State basketball champions for the city of Xenia. This six-man squad won the title by a score of 20-18 over the Columbus Hi-Y team.

Our committee decided that these young men and their coach needed to be recognized since they were the victims of an oppressive society. Being denied the equal opportunity, we will never know what successes they may have attained outside of their "colored" tourney. What we can help them to finally achieve, however, is the recognition that they undoubtedly deserve which will allow the children of today to gaze upon their championship plaque and ask the question ..... "Why?"
