1959-60 MVL Champions
Dayton District Finalist
22 Wins 1 Loss
Kneeling: John Grooms, Gary Walthall, John Barry Clemens, Paul Storey, Ted Day
Standing: Coach Bill Kaylor, Gary Allen, John Thomas, Leon Phoenix, Gary Neff, Mike Anderson, Mgr. LeRoy McKinney
Next to the 1942 State Champion, the 1959-60 team is arguably the next greatest team in Xenia basketball history. After 22 straight wins, their only loss was in the Dayton District finals to eventual State champion, Dayton Roosevelt. John Clemens (Ohio Wesleyan), Ted Day (Central State), Paul Storey (Ohio U), and Gary Walthall (Cedarville) played college basketball while Clemens furthered his career in the NBA for eleven seasons after being drafted by the New York Knicks. Day played on the NAIA National Champions for the Central State Marauders. Clemens and Day were inducted into the Hall of Fame's first class, the Class of 2011. All of the above mentioned players including John Grooms and Leon Phoenix made the All-MVL team …. probably the first and last time that many players from one team will dominate any all-league team.
